In the age of throwaway fashion, trends can change from one week to the next. Chasing them is not only exhausting but can leave our wallets light. While ever-changing style offers us a variety of ways to express ourselves, it also gives our wardrobe an expiration date. Staying current means cramming our closets with items we’ll hardly need or use.
Yvonne Casillas, Owner of Laurel and Muse (L&M), believes that true style doesn’t have to expire. What’s her anti-dote to the revolving door of fashion? Yvonne says it’s all about buying wisely so you can do more with less. “Impulse buys leave us with so many odds and ends that we only use once. At the end of the day we all want our money to go towards things that stand the test of time. I like to focus on using fewer items in smarter ways.”
Yvonne has a few fool-proof tips for keeping your wardrobe simple and timeless:
Choose staple items in neutral colors like black, white, nude, or grey. This rule of thumb not only makes it easier to put great outfits together, but it gives your go-to pieces longevity. Bright colors are great too, but patterns and palettes change every season so you’ll want to save the pineapple prints or lime green pops for your accents.
Be picky about materials. Choosing wisely means taking a little extra time to understand what your clothes and accessories are made from. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen will always outperform synthetic fabrics. They’re more breathable and often look and feel nicer than the alternative. Although choosing high quality materials like real leather may cost more, each piece will last longer. The bonus is that they become softer and more beautiful with time, and unlike synthetics, can always be dressed up or down.
Choose your pieces strategically. This can actually be more cost-effective in the long-run. Thoughtful purchases allow you to transcend throw-away fashion so you can build an enduring wardrobe around fewer, but higher quality staples. A great jacket, elegant heels, and a beautiful handbag can bring together anything from that of-the-moment jumpsuit to a vintage cocktail dress.
Yvonne and L&M are all about high quality, multi-functional fashion. Each of their handbags is designed with both adaptability and longevity in mind, so that you can do less with more and never have to sacrifice style.
